In contrast to the function blocks

 data blocks do not possess an algorithm. Only one data type is permitted for each data block. The maximum number of data is limited to 256 per block. The following data types exist: – Single precision analog values (10–4) – Double precision analog values (10–9) – Binary values – Time values – Alphanumeric characters The driver blocks for input and output of analog or binary process values and the bus linking blocks for analog or binary values and alphanumeric characters fetch or route the values from or to data blocks initiated according to parameterization.

User–specific new function blocks

 (user function blocks) In automation systems, the user may create and integrate his own function blocks in addition to the standard function blocks. The system provides special configuration instructions (see Chap. 5) for creating new data structures and programs: – Data structure generation (operator input ”NEDA”) Definition of the data structure (data description and original parameter set) for a new function block. A description (data type, element name, attributes, etc.) is entered for each block input/output. Process–controllable parameters in a block are represented on the process communication keyboard in the same fashion as standard function blocks.
