Internal structure of a mini floppy disk The mini floppy disk unit 6DS3900–8AD can process three different diskette formats: – 80 tracks, double sided, high density, 512 bytes/sector (standard setting) Net storage capacity: 1 MByte Diskette type: HD – 80 tracks, double sided, single density, 128 bytes/sector Net storage capacity: 320 kBytes Diskette type: DS, SD (HD not suitable) – 35 tracks, single sided, single density, 128 bytes/sector Net storage capacity: 64 kBytes Diskette type: SS, SD (HD not suitable) The maximum storage area which can be filed is 1 MByte (16 diskettes).

It is not possible to use only high density diskettes

as the magnetic coating of these diskettes requires a higher magnetic intensity for write access than standard diskettes. This higher intensity is only available if HD mode of the floppy disk unit has been selected. The intensity is also reduced when recording with lower density has been selected. It is not possible to use high intensity for writing onto diskettes with lower density, as data recording would interfere with adjacent tracks (crosstalk). The following table shows the number of diskettes required for a complete copy of the memory contents (dump) for various AS 235 memory sizes and different diskette formats.

The default setting from AS 230 version E onwards is 80 tracks

 DS, HD. The parameters need not be set if the directory (“DI;”) is to be displayed or a configuration (”LA;”) loaded. Here, the diskette format is adjusted automatically if GB 260 = 1B has been selected. The format previously selected applies for all other selections.  If the format is changed manually due to re–parameterization, this selection remains valid until the format is changed again or a system restart performed producing a preset of GB 260 = 1B. GB 261 remains unchanged by a restart.Filing onto a formatted diskette with configuration, i.e. the previous diskette contents will be overwritten. Required: Formatted diskettes (cf. “FORM, ...”) with identical diskette names.
