Messages provide information on unusual or unfavorable events in the execution of a process. They represent unexpected information which cannot be recognized as a clearly expected result of a previous event.

An I & C alarm is generated if a fault is detected during the system test of the hardware and software during on–line processing. An I & C alarm consists of the date, time, name of block causing the alarm, and the fault number. Cyclic signalling of the fault is prevented by a flag. The same message can be generated again following enabling of the fault by an acknowledgement. All I & C alarms set the cabinet lamp and a flag in the GB.ORPA (GB20). The user can also request triggering of the cabinet lamp by setting the binary variable GB.ORPA.20 (using a marshalling block, STEP or TML).

The flag GB20 and the cabinet lamp

are deleted at intervals of one minute. The cabinet lamp is therefore extinguished if the I & C alarm is no longer present in the system (additional check possible using QF command). The lamp lights up permanently if the fault is continuous. An I & C alarm is displayed in the message line on the monitor, logged on a selectable printer and output on the bus provided the corresponding devices are connected. The I & C alarms are listed in Section 10.7.9. The meanings of the fault numbers are described there together with their causes. I & C alarms from standard peripheral units (e.g. printer not ready) may only be detected and signalled when the device is addressed for the second time. This depends on the system.

Operator messages

Operator messages are generated when inputs are made on operator–accessible blocks. The output is logged on a selectable printer and applied to the bus. The entered command is signalled, but not the executed command. The I & C alarms which have occured are stored in the buffer SL.@LTM. The buffer size must be parameterized in GA.ORPA.39 in the range from 50 to 256 messages (default setting: 50).
