MEL/PKM messages The MEL block generates a plaintext message which is activated via a binary input. The message text must be entered. The output can be made on selectable devices with the date/time. If the message is successful, a binary output is set in the block and a common display in the GB.ORPA (GB21). The printer output can be diverted to a replacement device if the former is not ready, e.g. end of paper. The message line output can be switched off. A text output to the bus is always carried out if MEL blocks are active. The MEL block can enter its plain text message in a user buffer (STRT.MEAP) for user–specific purposes.

Status messages 

All operator–accessible blocks generate a status message. A status message comprises the compressed statuses of a block (on, off, manual, automatic, etc.); these are only sent via the bus when they change (sporadic).External messages are those received from systems coupled via the bus. Such messages can only be received following the “ANM operation”. Only plaintext messages can be received as external messages (MEL messages, I & C alarms and operator messages). The message line on the monitor outputs a common message in this case (e.g. with AS 235: EXT– LTM*S 3xx) as a reference that a message has been received from an external system. The I & C alarm is logged in detailed form at the same time (including the bus and participant numbers).

The plain text messages are stored in three different buffers 

subsequently logged. A logging device can be selected, or the outputs suppressed, using the GE operation for each group of plaintext messages. The GE operation applies to both internal and external messages at the same time. The buffer sizes for received messages can be selected in GA.ORPA. This applies to the system and user buffers. The system must be stored and reloaded following modifications to the GA cells. Three buffers are available for user–specific purposes: STRT.STAP I & C alarms (external)
