With high resistance grounding, ground fault currents are normally limited to 10 amperes or less to allow continued operation of a system until the fault is located and cleared. However, if a ground fault is not located and cleared before another ground fault occurs, the high magnitude ground currents will flow through the equipment grounding conductors and operate the circuit protective devices. (c) Where phase-to-neutral loads are not served, low resistance grounding of engine/generators may be used where limiting the ground-fault current is important. Such grounding may be used to limit damage to large engine/generators. There is also an additional element of protection for personnel who may be working on or near the engine/generator.
