It is often advisable to select diodes with an even greater average current rating because they have lower thermal resistance between junction and case and hence ease heat sinking requirements. It is good design practice to limit the maximum junction temperature to 125oC. Testing should be done to insure the power-on surge current is within the diode’s IFSM rating.

Ripple current rating 

The bus capacitor’s 120 Hz ripple current rating should equal or exceed the 6410’s current setting. The capacitor’s working voltage rating must exceed the maximum bus voltage under all line, load, and regen conditions. Select a capacitor rated for at least 1.3 times the nominal bus voltage. Example Suppose a 6410 is operating at 70 volts and is set for 5 A rms motor current. Assuming a 60 Hz line, a bus capacitor of 6000 micro farads should be used. The capacitor should have a 120 Hz ripple current rating of at least 5 amps rms and a working voltage of at least 1.3 * 70 = 91 volts.
