Content introduction

(1) Air terminals (lightning rods) must intercept, or divert to themselves, any lightning stroke that might otherwise strike the building or structure being protected. Antennas and their associated transmission lines/supporting structures shall be protected by air terminals rather than be dependent upon transient protection/suppression devices. (a) Erect air terminals on the points of highest elevation and on other exposed areas to intercept the stroke before it has an opportunity to damage the structure, equipment, or components mounted thereon. The terminal points must be placed high enough above the structure to eliminate the danger of fire from the arc. (b) To keep from exploding, igniting, or otherwise being destroyed, air terminals should be made of copper, aluminum, brass, or bronze. The minimum sizes are 1.27 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter for solid copper, brass, or bronze rods and 1.6 cm (5/8 inch) in diameter for solid aluminum rods.
