The shields of all telephone cables entering a CE facility must be bonded to each other and to the earth electrode subsystem through the steel entry plate. This measure eliminates harmful differences of potential between the various telephone cables entering the facility. It is important that electrical continuity of all cable shields is maintained. Care must be taken to ensure that shields of aerial telephone cables are bonded to any connecting buried or underground cable shields. This provides a path to ground for lightning and power currents and provides an effective noise shield. (3) Configuration control must be considered during the design phase. Conducting penetrations must be bonded carefully around the penetration perimeter (360 degrees) to the shield entry plate to prevent aperture coupling to the facility interior or to inner conductors of shielded cables.
